Salih Hassan is trapped in history! One hundred years ago on this very day (November 2nd 1917), the British foreign secretary Lord Balfour signed over Salih's country Palestine to the Zionist movement on behalf of the British government - the notorious "Balfour declaration." What followed was partition: the creation of the state of Israel along with chaos, displacement and "nakba" ("catastrophe") for the Palestinians. It's still going on today.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of this act, Salih a.k.a Oud Resists has rendered the text of the Balfour declaration in musical form. Accompanied only by the oud, his delivery tells you all you need to know about his feelings on this subject. And for those of us for whom Britain is home, this track can help us reflect on the colonial actions of this country and their continuing global consequences.

Dear Lord Rothschild,
I have much pleasure in conveying to you. on behalf of His Majesty's Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by, the Cabinet
His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.
I should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to the knowledge of the Zionist Federation.
